There once was a young man from Hall,
Who died in the Spring in the Fall,
T’would have been a sad thing had he died in the Spring,
But he didn’t; he died in the Fall.

Last 3 years we’ve been making pilgrimages to the Northeast for fall color. Poconos, then Berkshires, and this year we’re doing Green mountains in Stowe VT. Looking forward to the temperature change and the color. Hopefully leaves will be changing by the time we get there in a week…
@chienfou
I did a fall trip through Canada for the foliage not realizing that Manitoba and Saskatchewan were basically like driving across Nebraska.
But it got much better in Alberta.
I disagree with the official date for Fall. Not Fall here. According to my local weather experts, it could be not awful by the end of next week though.
@cbatte@rockblossom In my opinion, it only becomes Autumn, which is a section of the calendar. It will be Fall when the leaves start to turn. One is a human arbitrariness; the other is a natural phenomenon. Autumn exists everywhere in the given hemisphere; Fall doesn’t happen in the Tropics.
@chienfou The naming of the season is, however, ours. The equinoxes existed before us, and will continue after us. Autumn dies with us. (Fall might die because of us.)
@werehatrack Okay - it is definitely Autumn here, but may or may not be Fall where you are. Especially if “where you are” happens to be in the southern hemisphere, where it is Spring. Or in Goose Bay, Labrador - where the leaves never turn because of the 100 percent lack of trees.
@chienfou is it still crazy hot down there? It was 69 here today. It’s normally still in the 80s and 90s until at least October so I’m loving the cooler temps.
@chienfou@sillyheathen Dunno about Alabama, but we’re still hitting the mid to upper 90s during the afternoon here in Houston. But the humidity has dropped under 50%, which helps a bit.
@chienfou@sillyheathen@werehatrack Upper 90’s here too. And still humid. I’d run away from home but the cost of gas makes it less expensive to run the A/C than run to somewhere cooler.
@Kidsandliz@sillyheathen
Looking at the 10-day forecast seems we’re going to hit just below 90. Evenings have been a bit cooler which is nice, hoping my tomatoes will recover enough to start producing again (til Nov).
The the only thing good about winter is you can take kool pic in the Snow. I am NOT a fan of the cold.
Yay! That means only 2 or so more months of summer weather here.
@phendrick And maybe now we can get some occasional rain ( and hopefully without having to have a late season hurricane to instigate it).
I will believe it Fall when the temperature outside goes below furnace.
@hchavers I had to go around closing windows Monday evening when I heard the furnace come on (NW Oregon).
@hchavers I know. I am sick of hearing every night on the weather we have broken the record for days over 90 for the month and real feel over 100.
Super El Niño is nigh

[from memory so might not match other versions]
Fall is almost here
Wish it would stop being hot
Then I want some snow.
@pmarin Why does the word “haiku” sound vaguely like a sneeze?
Definitely most excited for it to be cooler & maybe rain or snow enough to get us out of the drought.
I love the fall foliage, which makes it one of my favorite seasons.
The cooler weather is also nice. I don’t like hot.

@cbatte Regardless of actual weather, when we reach the equinox, it autumn-atically becomes Fall.
@cbatte @rockblossom In my opinion, it only becomes Autumn, which is a section of the calendar. It will be Fall when the leaves start to turn. One is a human arbitrariness; the other is a natural phenomenon. Autumn exists everywhere in the given hemisphere; Fall doesn’t happen in the Tropics.
@cbatte @rockblossom @werehatrack
I beg to differ … The equinox is NOT “a human arbitrariness.” It’s a celestial event.
@chienfou The naming of the season is, however, ours. The equinoxes existed before us, and will continue after us. Autumn dies with us. (Fall might die because of us.)
@werehatrack
By that logic everything you’ve written is an arbitrariness
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Cerridwyn The word “Samhain” is useful for sorting.
